A Preventive Maintenance Guide for Lift Stations

Pump controls and pressure equipment in a utility installation

A wastewater lift station moves sewage uphill when gravity cannot. Its pumps, floats or level sensor, check valves, rails, control panel, and alarm operate in a corrosive environment where grease and debris can hide developing problems. Preventive maintenance is less about an arbitrary annual visit than trend awareness: how often pumps start, how long they run, whether alternating pumps share the load, and whether the wet-well level returns to its normal range.

Build a repeatable inspection route

At each check, look for an illuminated alarm, unusual humming, heat or moisture in the panel, damaged conduits, odors beyond the normal wet-well area, and ground settlement. Verify that the alarm circuit works without defeating safety controls. Observe pump-down from a safe location, record run times and amperage where qualified to do so, and compare results with prior visits. In commercial corridors around Leesburg and Lady Lake, a log can reveal growing inflow or grease loading before peak occupancy exposes it.

  • •Exercise and clean floats or verify level-sensor readings.
  • •Inspect check valves, isolation valves, guide hardware, and accessible piping.
  • •Remove grease, wipes, rags, and settled debris before they impair controls.
  • •Test alarms, remote notifications, generator connections, and battery backup where installed.
  • •Document pump hours, starts, amperage, service performed, and parts used.

Use operating data to schedule service

One pump accumulating far more hours than its partner may indicate a failed alternator, disabled pump, or uneven controls. Longer runtimes can signal wear, an obstructed discharge, a leaking check valve that sends wastewater backward, or increased infiltration. Very frequent short cycles wear motors and contactors. These patterns are more informative than waiting for noise. Pump manufacturer limits, station design, and site demand should determine cleaning and overhaul intervals.

Respond to alarms conservatively

When a high-level alarm activates, minimize water use and verify whether utility power and the dedicated breaker are available without repeatedly resetting a trip. Do not reach into a wet well or bypass a float. If wastewater is nearing the lid, fixtures are backing up, or the panel smells burned, request prompt service. The technician can distinguish a control fault from a blocked pump or downstream restriction and arrange safe pumping if storage time is running out.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a lift station be inspected?

Frequency depends on use, pump design, and consequence of failure. Monthly visual checks are common for active private systems, with more complete scheduled service based on manufacturer guidance and operating history.

Does pressing alarm silence fix the problem?

No. Silence only stops the audible signal. The high-water condition, failed component, power issue, or abnormal inflow still needs to be identified.

Can a wet well be cleaned by maintenance staff?

Only by trained personnel using appropriate confined-space, electrical, and biological-hazard procedures. A wet well should never be entered casually.
