Tankless Water Heater Basics
Unlike tank heaters, tankless water heaters do not store hot water, they heat the water only when the hot water is used. Traditional electric tank heaters consume 20% of the total electricity usage in the typical home making it the 2nd highest power-consuming appliance in the home after cooling and heating. A standard 50-gallon electric water heater (you can read more about our tank water heaters here) can cost between $500 and $900 each year depending on its efficiency rating and the cost per kilowatt. Tankless water heaters can have substantial savings due to the fact that it only uses energy when YOU are using hot water.
Tankless Water Heater Installation
Tankless Water Heaters, sometimes known as on-demand water heaters or point-of-use water heaters are smaller and are wall mounted. They can be installed indoors or outdoors. They take up less room than traditional tank heaters because they do not have to store hot water (they have a flow sensor that signals the burner to turn on when hot water is needed, when the hot water is shut off, the burner in the tankless water heater turns off as well.
Installation involves piping cold water into the unit, and hot water out of the unit, sometimes a re-circulation pump is recommended. The re-circulation pump can cycle the hot water during peak usage times allowing the water to heat even more quickly. The tankless water heater will need either gas or electricity to function. If the unit is installed indoors and it is a gas heater, a vent will need to be installed for the exhaust fumes in addition to a gas line connected to a natural gas meter or a propane tank. Electric requirements vary depending on the demand of the electric tankless water heater.
Tankless Water Heater Maintenance & Repair
Tankless water heaters need to be flushed just like tank water heaters to keep scale buildup out of the heat exchanger. If you do not want to do this regular maintenance, we recommend installing a water filter or a whole house water filter before the water enters your tankless water heater. If your tankless water heater is located outside it is highly recommended to protect it from the rain.
