Your Garbage Disposal is a luxury for your kitchen, but if not used properly can cause issues resulting in necessary repair or replacement or drain problems.
For optimum performance run your disposal with water and only put food scraps. Large amounts of food waste should be composted or thrown in the trash.DO NOT put the following down the garbage disposal:
- Coffee grounds
- Citrus peels
- Rice
- Pasta
- Egg shells
These foods do not break down as well or can become starchy and expand down the line and could lead to backups and/or clog your septic filter quicker than necessary.
Garbage disposals vary in power from 1/3 Horsepower to 1 Horsepower. Some can grind better than others. If you don’t think your garbage disposal is grinding food waste like it used to, you can run water through it, turn it on and run 5 ice cubes in it to sharpen the blades and clean the grinding chamber. Additionally, treat it monthly with Bio-Clean which will clean it out by breaking down all the organic buildup inside.
If you have children in the home, teach them about the importance of protecting your drains by disposing of food waste properly. If you think it is time for a replacement or if you need your Garbage Disposal repaired, feel free to give us a call or book online.
Proper use of your garbage disposal can keep your sink smelling fresh and keep your drains clear as well as protecting your septic system or city water treatment plant.
Keep your kitchen running smoothly!
